Former Kangaroo and Swan Shannon Grant has been alerted that his coaching role with VAFA club Williamstown CYS has been revoked just days after earning the job.

As first reported by The Herald Sun, the decision to dump Grant came after the playing group of the amateur side voted against the 1999 Norm Smith Medallist's hiring following his past offenses of domestic violence.

Grant was charged with several counts of assault against his former partner in June of 2018. The 301 gamer was also fined for assaulting a women in a pub brawl within the same year.

Despite initially being sentenced to a six month prison sentence for his actions, Grant's defense team managed to overturn the punishment, with the now 44-year-old instead ordered to partake in 200 hours of community service.

After receiving backlash from members of the public after hiring the premiership player, Williamstown CYS issued the following statement after their amendment:

“The club executive wish to advise that the club and Shannon Grant have agreed to part ways,” club spokesman Rod Ford stated.

“We are sorry for any hurt caused to the victims of domestic abuse and those associated with them.

“We appreciate the unity, empathy and care the players have demonstrated towards each other over the past 48 hours.

“We are sorry to our entire playing group for the position we have put you in."

Ford's comments come in the wake of the club's previous stance that Grant had been hired despite the knowledge of his abusive past.

“Shannon has been accountable and made changes to multiple areas of his life. We are supportive of providing opportunities to people who have worked hard to grow from their mistakes and are willing to educate others on this.

“The club looks forward to the leadership and guidance that Shannon will offer the club both on and off field in 2022 and beyond.”

The club with a rich history in the seaside suburb will play in their 136th season in 2022.

A replacement for Grant has yet to be named.
