North Melbourne great Wayne Carey has announced Tom Hawkins and Trent Cotchin as the two best players in the AFL at the moment.

Carey was quizzed on Triple M's Rush Hour show regarding numerous topics surrounding the top eight, All-Australian team speculation, coach of the year and the best player.

When discussing the best player, Carey gave no hesitation in his answer.

"Trent Cotchin and Tom Hawkins right now," Carey declared.

While Richmond sit pretty on top of the AFL ladder, Cotchin is enjoying some form of his own averaging 22.7 disposals per game along with 4.2 tackles.

Hawkins is also enjoying a purple patch of form after bagging seven goal hauls in successive weeks to sit second on the Coleman Medal and help resurrect Geelong's season, keeping them in the finals race.

The 30 year old has had sticky hands over the past few weeks, tallying up 18 marks, with Carey saying he has been on fire.

"His last ten weeks have been incredible," Carey said.

Asked who should win the Rising Star award, Carey responded: "Tom Doedee for me.

"He's been very very good. Just because he's over in Adelaide don't forget him."

Do you agree with Carey's comments?

Are Hawkins and Cotchin currently the games best two players?

Does Doedee deserve to win the Rising Star award?
