Former Brisbane Lions players Mitch Robinson and Rhys Mathieson have been handed an official warning by the Australian Communications and Media Authority for promoting an illegal online gambling service.

Robinson and Mathieson promoted the company Vegastars on their joint podcast "Rip Through It" from March-April in 2026 on Youtube and Instagram.

ACMA member Carolyn Lidgerwood said the pair of former Lions were quick in cancelling their connection with the company in question once they had been made aware of the laws.

"Illegal gambling services can cause significant financial harm to individuals and families, and influencers need to be aware that promoting these services is against the law," Lidgerwood said.

"After the ACMA contacted Mr Robinson and Mr Mathieson about the conduct, they accepted responsibility and promptly ended their involvement with Vegastars and removed all promotional material. We have now issued each with a formal warning to ensure their future compliance with the law.

"All influencers are now firmly on notice. Anyone who uses their online profile to promote illegal gambling services will face regulatory action which can include significant financial penalties."

Those financial penalties range from $65,520 up to $2,730,000 pending on the level and repetition of involvement in the illegal company and its promotion.

Robinson and Mathieson published Vegastar's name, logo and website address, as well as footage of gameplay and commentary promoting the service.

ACMA asked Australian internet providers to block Vegastars' website in January 2026.

From January 2027, it will be illegal for wagering services to use current or former athletes, social media influencers and other notable people to promote gambling.
