The pathway from the AFL to the NFL has become increasingly familiar, with a growing number of former Australian footballers making the switch to American football as punters.
But with the NFL finally making its long-awaited debut in Australia on Friday at the MCG between the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams, it begs the question: could an Aussie footballer make an impact in another position on the gridiron?
In the spirit of the historic clash, I set out to build a hypothetical NFL team using current AFL players — matching their physical attributes, skill sets and playing styles to the positions that could best suit them in American football.
Offensive Lineup
Quarterback
Nick Daicos - natural-born playmaker, can read the game better than anyone else in the league and is elusive to catch on the tackle.
Running back
Harley Reid - fast, strong and impossible to tackle at times, with his stiff arm that has become a staple of his game and one needed in such a position.
Wide Receivers
Jed Walter - Tall and great hands, has lightning take-off speed after winning the 2025 Grand Final sprint.
Beau McCreery - One of the fastest players in the league each year, with an ability to grab aerial balls and burst on the run after a catch that is well suited for a slot receiver.
Jordan Clark - Fast, strong, tough and a great mark of the ball, Clark ticks every box needed for a utility receiver.
Tight End
Josh Treacy - Easily the best hands in the league, fast and precise when going for the grab, has the core and arm strength needed for blocking.
Offensive Guards
Patrick Voss - Undeniable core strength and one of the only players in the competition you don't want to get in between with.
Tristan Xerri - Big body, quick feet, knows when to shepherd extremely well, which can translate well into blocking.
Offensive Tackles
Jordon Sweet - A strong presence that doesn't need to move around much to be effective and knows how to play his role for the benefit of others.
Kieren Briggs - Another tall body that can stop tacklers than comes his way on pure size and strength, partnered with agility.
Centre
James Sicily - Composed and tough to get past while still being coordinated, someone who has a commanding leadership presence needed to lead an offensive line.
