Saints draftee Josh Battle was the star of yesterday's intra-club match, booting five goals.

Battle was taken at pick 39 in 2016's National Draft, and according to the Saints twitter account he was lining up on experienced defender Sean Dempster.

The young forward booted 24 goals last year for the Dandenong Stingrays, leading the goalkicking in the under-18 championships.

Jack Billings was another standout, kicking two goals and gathering plenty of possessions in the Saints midfield.

Jake Carlisle made his return, partnering former Collingwood defender Nathan Brown in defense.

Saints assistant Coach Rohan Welsh told AFL.com.au Carlisle is progressing nicely.

“The main thing for him was to get through a half and he’ll probably play 75 per cent next week against Port Adelaide," he said.

“We’ll build him up to play a full game in the second JLT match, and the third.

“He needs to play some footy and the more footy he plays the better he’s going to get.”

New recruits Koby Stevens and Jack Steele also impressed. Nick Riewoldt, Leigh Montagna and Jack Steven didn't feature in the match.
