In the lead-up to the annual Sir Doug Nicholls Round - which celebrates the culture of Indigenous Australians and their contribution to football - it seemed fitting to look back on some of the stars that have graced the football field.
With the archives deep and long, a limitation on just the AFL era still rendered the task of determining just who the top 10 Indigenous players would be, near impossible.
These 10 are superstars in their own right, but some may count themselves unfortunate not to be mentioned...
11Nicky Winmar
A gifted footballer whose natural skills permeated through the football landscape as the first Indigenous player to reach 200 games.
Winmar donned St Kilda's tri colours, and is a much loved member of the Saints family for his dominance on field, and his tremendous work off it.
A two-time best and fairest winner, two-time All-Australian and a Mark of the Year winner.
Winmar's powerful statement in 1993 against Collingwood, known as the 'Winmar's stand', put a fork in the road in a stand against racism.
