For the first time since COVID hit Australia, the 2022 AFL Futures squad will take place during this year's grand final on Saturday, September 24.

The match will consist of two teams with the squad of 48 players spilt into respective sides led by former three-time premiership Tiger Bachar Houli and Carlton 300-gamer Marc Murphy.

Next month's curtain-raiser event will see the best Under-17 talent from across the country go head-to-head, with the majority to partake in next year's draft.

Some of the names to take part include potential 2023 Pick 1 in East Ringwood junior Nick Watson, Zane Duursma - the young brother of Port's Xavier - and Bendigo Pioneers' Harley Reid.

Long-time AFL Talent Manager Kevin Sheahan says it is fantastic to bring back the event after a long two year wait.

"The AFL Futures match will give AFL club recruiting staff and football fans the opportunity to see the future stars of our game on the biggest day of the AFL season," he said.

"This will be the fifth time the NAB AFL Futures match has been staged and the first since 2019.

"All players who feature in the 2022 NAB AFL Futures match will be eligible for selection in the 2023 NAB AFL Draft."

Current players who have featured in recent years include North Melbourne midfielder Luke Davies-Uniacke, Fremantle's Andrew Brayshaw and Caleb Serong, Melbourne ruckman Luke Jackson, Gold Coast's Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson and Western Bulldogs young forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan.

The match will commence at 9:30 am AEST and will be live to watch via the AFL.com.au livestream.
