The Channel Seven network has announced that Geelong superstar Patrick Dangerfield will join the 7AFL team, the network announced on Thursday night.

The Brownlow medallist will provide columns for the website and special comments during the network's AFL coverage in the lead-up to September. This will come as his Cats chase premiership glory at the same time.

As an outspoken member of the AFL fraternity, Dangerfield is no stranger to giving his opinions. His insights could prove invaluable to the network's broadcast of games as an experienced veteran still currently playing.

He will also "provide exclusive content as a regular columnist for 7NEWS.com.au, bringing footy fans his take on the biggest stories and headlines surrounding the game" according to the announcement.

The Cats midfield powerhouse will make his debut on Channel Seven's coverage of St Kilda against Fremantle at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night. He will join veterans Hamish McLachlan, Luke Darcy and Wayne Carey, as well as rising star Abbey Holmes.

The network are understandably pleased with the addition. Managing Director of Seven Melbourne and Head of Network Sport Lewis Martin was effusive in his praise of the Geelong star.

“Patrick is arguably one of the greatest players of the modern era and we are rapt to have him as a member of our 7AFL coverage team," Martin said.

“As a current day player, Patrick’s knowledge and deep understanding of the modern game will make for an incredibly insightful broadcast for footy fans at home. You won’t want to miss a moment, right here on Your Home of Footy.”

Dangerfield himself was just as pleased. Having already done his fair share of media work, the move presents as the next logical step for him.

“I can’t wait to get behind the microphone on Saturday night. To have the opportunity to work alongside Seven’s commentary team and the 7NEWS.com.au team is a huge privilege and something I’m really grateful for," he said.

"As someone still playing the game, I hope that I can share valuable insights with people watching at home about key moments in the match and what the players might be experiencing on the field.

"I'm really looking forward to analysing the game among football's best, including some greats of the game that I grew up watching."
