A brand new vision-based score assist system will be implemented for the 2026 AFLW season, replacing the ball tracking technology that had been used since 2024.

Unlike in the AFL, reviews will now be initiated by the score assist official via the Umpire Communications System, rather than by the goal umpire. This replaces the ball tracking technology that supported score reviews across the past two AFLW seasons.

This new system will utilise all available broadcast cameras and fixed cameras at AFLW matches, as well as four new goal post cameras that will be installed to help support score reviews.

AFL executive general manager of AFLW health and football operations Laura Kane said the new system would deliver a consistent and efficient score review process.

“The vision-based system will provide match officials with additional vision to support decision making, strengthening the accuracy, consistency and efficiency of the score review process," Kane said.

If this system proves successful throughout the AFLW season, it could pave the way for its introduction into the AFL.

The current ARC process has faced criticism over consistency and transparency, while these new additional camera angles could help deliver more accurate and reliable score review decisions, something every football fan wants to see.

The league has a history of using the AFLW and state leagues for trialling new systems and rules for the AFL, with the recent addition of the lasso rule a perfect example.

The system will be in place from the opening match of the 2026 NAB AFLW season which starts in August.
