Essendon legend Kevin Sheedy has doubled down on his support for James Hird winning the Bombers' coaching job.

Sheedy has been a long-time loyal supporter of Hird, his former superstar player, and strongly backed him to return before Brad Scott scored the role.

As the club prepares to step up its selection process, Sheedy is defiant and won't back down as skipper of the Hird Fan Club.

"That's just my opinion and I'm allowed to have it," Sheedy told radio station SEN.

"I won't change (my view).”

Essendon has been winless since caretaker Dean Solomon replaced Scott, not only being embarrassed on the scoreboard, but also showing a lack of fight and spirit - a Solomon trademark in his playing days.

Sheedy said now is the right time to make up for the error of overlooking Hird last time.

“The last mistake we made you can rectify it very simply," he said.

“I think he (Hird) is a more rounded person now in his life than what he was 15 years ago.

“He's lived life a lot longer, he's gone through a hell of a lot of difficulties. He's come back from seven fractures in his skull, a broken foot, he missed nearly 100 games and still won five best and fairests - he's got character written all over him.

“This last decade he would have learnt a hell of a lot as a person in general and be a more rounded coach than what he was the first time."

As Sheedy mounted a strong case for Hird, he also conceded the scenes on Sunday where he was urging Bombers fans to stay and not leave early, were staged.

Sheedy admitted the fans were actors and he was filming an advertisement for DiDi. He said the scenes were "misconstrued".
