To make it in the AFL, players need to have talent, skill, determination, and sometimes, a little bit of luck.
While being lucky isn't going to make or break someone's career, it could help their side win a game due to a lucky bounce or a favourable free kick, but not everyone in the league can benefit from a positive stroke of fortune.
Some players just haven't been able to get the ball bouncing their way at times this season, while some players (outlined by the graphics below) seem to have just walked under way too many ladders and seen a lot of black cats.
Geelong's Mark Blicavs can count himself as one of the unluckiest players in the league, as it seems the umpires are only paying attention to him when he's doing the wrong thing.
Blicavs has only received four free kicks so far this season, but has given away a staggering 22, which is a differential of -18.
Port Adelaide's Jackson Trengove isn't too far behind, with his differential a very lopsided -16.
Worst free kick differentials by a player in 2017
Player | Frees for | Frees against | Differential |
Mark Blicavs (Geel) | 4 | 22 | -18 |
Jackson Trengove (PA) | 18 | 34 | -16 |
Darcy Moore (Coll) | 5 | 19 | -14 |
Jack Leslie (GC) | 8 | 20 | -12 |
Jack Newnes (StK) | 6 | 18 | -12 |
Clayton Oliver (Melb) | 14 | 25 | -11 |
Eddie Betts (Adel) | 11 | 22 | -11 |
Daniel Rioli (Rich) | 7 | 18 | -11 |
While the above table may also just be a problem with a player's discipline, the below example is surely just a spot of bad luck for the 14 players named.
444 players have kicked at least one goal so far in 2017, although these 14 men couldn't be further away from bagging one.
These 14 players are the only players to have not kicked a goal so far this season from the entire list of players who have played every single game in 2017.
Port Adelaide's Tom Clurey and Fremantle's Joel Hamling are surely the hardest done by, as the pair have both played 30+ games throughout their career, but are still yet to break their duck in front of goal.
St Kilda's Sam Gilbert can also count himself quick unfortunate in particular, as the veteran defender has kicked four behinds this season without a major.
