North Melbourne Football Club alumni Liam Anthony has become WAFL side East Fremantle's next senior coach.

The former Roo played 58 AFL games from 2009-14, after he was plucked out of the Sharks colts program with Pick 43 in the 2008 National Draft.

The 39-year-old said he was overjoyed to return to the club and excited to guide the next school of Sharks through their development.

"East Fremantle has been a huge part of my life, so to return as senior coach is an incredible honour," Anthony said.

"I grew up supporting the Sharks, had the privilege of playing for the club and understand what it means to represent East Fremantle.

"My focus will be on building strong relationships, establishing clear standards and creating an environment where players and coaches can get the best out of themselves.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to build a successful, connected football program and can't wait to get started."

After Anthony was delisted from North Melbourne he returned to play for East Fremantle where he became a vice-captain and best-and-fairest winner.

Anthony takes over the reins from Bill Monaghan, a central figure in the club's history who guided the Sharks to their 30th WAFL flag; breaking a 25-year drought in the process.

The new Easts leader has previous coaching experience within East Fremantle's talent pathway, the WA State Academy, as well as leading Fremantle CBC to the 2022 Perth Football League premiership.

East Fremantle fell to second last on the ladder in 2026 having lost a number of players to the AFL system in recent years including Milan Murdock (West Coast), Brynn Teakle (North Melbourne then the VFL), Mitch Zadow (Port Adelaide) and Lachie Blakiston (Essendon).
