The AFL isn't perfect, no matter how much we wish it was.
Outside the product on the field, there are plenty of improvement areas that should be addressed by the league's powerbrokers.
Whether it be the amount of advertisements, or the AFL using its platform for more good, I have five ways the AFL could improve a fan's football experience...
More matches for a cause
The AFL fans love a game with meaning. Melbourne vs Collingwood's MND Big Freeze match seems to have provided most of Melbourne with both beanies and entertainment. The Pies vs Bombers in the Anzac Day clash repeatedly draws in huge crowds and State of Origin keeps football fresh in our minds during the off season.
These matches can also be a great way to support charities. Fremantle provides the perfect example of how the AFL can promote and support causes, with their annual Purple Haze match having raised over $2.1 million for the Starlight Children's Foundation.
Amid current calls from fans and teams alike for the AFL to focus more on supporting mental health, it may be the perfect time to add another themed match to the roster. The Melbourne Demons agree, currently in talks with both Carlton and Essendon to introduce a mental health awareness game next year, with proceeds to be donated to The Male Hug.
