The Sydney Swans and Greater Western Sydney Giants have made further list changes ahead of the AFL draft on 24 November.

The Swans have told luckless defender Alex Johnson and the Giants have told forward Sam Reid they will not be offered contracts for 2018.

But the careers of both may not be over yet, having been told by their respective clubs they may re-draft the pair as rookies.

Johnson, who has played 45 games, has not played senior football since he tasted premiership success in the 2012 grand final.

He has had a torrid time since then, requiring five knee reconstructions.

He finally returned to the Swans' NEAFL side this year but could not break into the senior team.

The club has said re-drafting the 25-year-old as a rookie would be contingent on a number of strength and fitness tests.

Swans head of football Tom Harley admitted it was a tough decision.

"Alex is an extremely popular and respected member of the playing group, and he has worked incredibly hard to get back to where he is," Harley said.

"While we know Alex is disappointed, he understands the decision and remains driven to play AFL football.

"We will reassess Alex and our list after the AFL National Draft, however in the interim Alex will continue to train with the team."

Across town, the Giants have cut Sam Reid for the second time.

Reid began his career at the Western Bulldogs, playing 10 games in four years. He joined the Giants for their first season in 2012 and played 14 games over two seasons before being delisted for the first time.

The 27-year-old stayed at the club as a NEAFL player and development coach before he was re-drafted by the Giants ahead of the 2016 season.

Reid has played 19 games over the last two years.

GWS head of football Wayne Campbell said the club was committed to placing Reid on the rookie list.

"With recent changes made to the list management rules, clubs have a bit more flexibility around moving players between the primary and rookie list," Campbell said.

"The club, Sam and his management are all on the same page regarding Sam’s playing future at the Giants and we will re-draft Sam onto our rookie list at the Rookie Draft."

The first delisted free agency period begins today.
