West Coast are unlikely to name Pick 1 Mid-Season Draft addition Tom McCarthy for Sunday's game against North Melbourne, while a pair of veteran Eagles need to get through training to play.
McCarthy, who joined the Eagles last week from Richmond's VFL program, has returned to Victoria this week for a family commitment, which the club was aware of prior to selecting him at the top of the draft board.
The situation places McCarthy - who impressed in his WAFL debut, recording 26 disposals last weekend -ย on the outer of selection for Round 13.
Fellow Mid-Season Draft selection Jacob Newton is set to play his first WAFL game for the Eagles this weekend when they host Perth at Lathlain Park.
"Both Tom and Jacob have to learn our system and game plan," coach Andrew McQualter said on Thursday.
"Tom's got a family commitment back in Melbourne today, so he won't train. We knew that prior to picking him up in the draft.
"When you're new, you're learning a whole new system. (McCarthy) showed some strengths in the WAFL game and we're really excited for their long-term futures at the footy club."
Meanwhile, premiership pair Liam Ryan (leg) and Jamie Cripps (knee) will need to get through training on Thursday to be given the green light to face the Kangaroos.
Ryan suffered a leg concern in the loss to Geelong on Sunday and will need to be match fit to be named, while Cripps is well ahead of schedule in his recovery.
"They're both a chance," McQualter said.
"We've got main training this morning and will see how they pull up. They're both a chance, which is great.
"(Cripps) has just healed a bit quicker than expected, which is terrific. He's still got a couple of things to tick off today, but hopefully he gets up. He's important to us."
Ruck-forward Bailey Williams is also in the mix, with the Eagles to weigh up their ruck tandem as they prepare to take on North Melbourne big man Tristan Xerri.
West Coast will name their 26-player squad on Thursday at 6:20 pm (AEST) before final teams are confirmed an hour prior to Sunday's 3:20 pm bounce at Hands Oval in Bunbury.
