The Sydney Swans will be without skipper Callum Mills' magnet for their shock preliminary final berth and beyond, after scans confirmed the worst - his right ACL was ruptured in the side's win over Brisbane.
Mills was attempting to corral Brisbane's Will Ashcroft near the boundary line, when his leg bent awkwardly under the duress of a sharp change in direction. The mechanism looked reminiscent of a standard ACL rupture, with brutal confirmation being handed down by the club on Monday afternoon.
The 29-year-old will head for surgery on the knee, following consultation with a specialist.
The injury means coach Dean Cox and co have yet another player to replace, having already lost superstar contributors Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner and Nick Blakey, and role players James Jordon and Riley Bice through club-enforced suspensions in the wake of the Pullman Hotel scandal.

Mills has been lauded by those inside Swans HQ for the way in which he has led the club in the aftermath of that scandal, with another year-long absence, the bitterest of pills to swallow.
Mills missed a large portion of the 2024 season through a shoulder injury sustained at the club's Mad Monday celebrations at 2023's conclusion.
"Bloods Culture" will need to stand up yet again in Mills' absence, with this latest trial only adding to what would be the most memorable of premiership fairytales, should it continue.
The Swans will face the winner of Fremantle and Geelong's semi-final rendezvous this Friday night in a home preliminary final.
It remains to be seen who will captain the side in that game and beyond, with skipper Mills absent through injury, vice-captain Heeney indefinitely suspended, and the club's nominated leadership group being comprised of those two men exclusively.
