In the lead-up to the annual Sir Doug Nicholls Round - which celebrates the culture of Indigenous Australians and their contribution to football - it seemed fitting to look back on some of the stars that have graced the football field.

With the archives deep and long, a limitation on just the AFL era still rendered the task of determining just who the top 10 Indigenous players would be, near impossible.

These 10 are superstars in their own right, but some may count themselves unfortunate not to be mentioned...

7Gavin Wanganeen

Wanganeen produced a very successful AFL career that spread across 16 years and two clubs.

The 1993 Brownlow Medallist was a two-time premiership player, sharing the success at Essendon and Port Adelaide over 10 years apart, while also claiming a Power best and fairest as a 30-year-old.

Wanganeen was awarded five All-Australian blazers; he was named in the Bombers' Team of the Century, and led Port Adelaide as captain for four seasons.

He played 300 top-flight games, and represented South Australia in State of Origin on eight occasions.
