Retired Gold Coast defender Brandon Ellis has found a new home in 2025, signing with South Cairns Football Club in the AFL Cairns competition.

Ellis opted to hang up the boots following 13 seasons across Richmond (2012-2019) and the Suns (2020-2024), resulting in 251 games and two premierships for the Tigers.

The 31-year-old retired halfway through the 2024 campaign, citing injuries for his decision.

However, in what is a massive coup for the local club, Ellis has signed with the Cutters, with the club revealing the news on social media.

"It is with great excitement that we would like to announce a huge recruiting coup for the club for the 2025 season," the statement said.

"Brandon Ellis has committed to the South Cairns Cutters for 2025.

"Having played over 250 AFL games with Richmond and the Gold Coast, Brandon is a 2-x premiership player with the Tigers.

"Brandon is no stranger to the Cutters as he delivered a speech to the senior boys before last year's grand final win.

"Brandon's decision to play for the Cutters was heavily influenced by playing with his mates.

"Besides being a star player, Brandon will bring professionalism and leadership to the club.

"It's an exciting time to be a Cutters supporter, and we look forward to Brandon pulling on a Cutters jumper in 2025."

Ellis joins the Cutters following their 2024 grand final victory, a feat that would break a 21-year drought.
