Believe it or not, Essendon vs Collingwood at the MCG isn't the only game ever played on Anzac Day. Footy on April 25 actually dates back to 1960, with a mix of memorable matchups, big crowds and a few quirky experiments along the way as the game found its place on one of the nation's most important days.
From double-headers and epic comebacks to games across the ditch and the odd freakish moment, I've gone digging through the archives to pull together a few of the best from over the years...
1R5 1984 – Collingwood v Carlton @ Waverley
Warren Ralph's Miss
More than 68,000 turned up at Waverley and got a proper old-school scrap between old-foes Collingwood and Carlton. The Pies led most of the day without ever putting it away, while the Blues kept coming but couldn't make it count.
Mark Williams was the difference with five in a game where goals were gold, but the Blues had their chances and wasted plenty. It all came down to one moment.
In similar circumstances to the most recent meeting between the two, after the siren, Warren Ralph had the shot to steal it or at least force a draw, and missed, summing up Carlton's day in one kick.
The Pies escaped by five, and the Blues were left to stew over one that got away.
