Melbourne is set to cut ties with Zurich as its major sponsor at the end of 2026.
It follows extensive criticism of Zurich this season as the insurance provider removed head trauma cover for AFL players.
It leaves AFL players without a financial fallback under the league's disability policy.
The issue has been particularly sensitive for those around Melbourne, with former player Angus Brayshaw not receiving a payout from the company despite being forced into medical retirement due to concussions.
Adelaide's Paul Seedsman and Collingwood's Nathan Murphy have also had their claims rejected, causing angst in the industry.
The club is adamant that it was a commercial decision to end the partnership.
"Look, angry isn't the right word, but I'm incredibly upset that Angus hasn't been successful in his bid to be able to get his insurance money," Gawn said on Triple M earlier this year.
"I think that (situation) is something that the AFL has to look into. I think they already are, to be fair, so that is something we want to get covered.
"I have Angus' blessing [to continue promoting Zurich]. Angus spoke really clearly to me about that.
"It just feels like this is a situation where Angus just lost a compo claim that we wish he got, but technically, probably shouldn't have got it."
A new major sponsor, which will be emblazoned on Melbourne's guernsey from 2027, is expected to be announced soon.
