Melbourne coach Steven King has given an expansive response on the importance of midfielder Tom Sparrow as he approaches a contract decision at the end of the season.
Sparrow has been one of Melbourne's big improvers under King, thriving with the increased midfield responsibility in 2026 following the off-season exits of Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver.
King has consistently praised Sparrow's growth throughout 2026 and been public in his confidence that the Demons would retain him.
“I'm just really confident because I know the way he plays week in and week out, the heart and soul player that he is,” King said.
“The history he's got here already as a premiership player, but also he could potentially be part of a new era here and be a bridge between two eras and challenge for another premiership.
“I'm confident Tommy's playing his best possible footy. He's an amazing athlete and a great player. The environment that he gets to showcase that each week, hopefully he can reflect on that and enjoy it.
“So I reflect on Tom Sparrow and the way he's playing and to me it's someone who's all in and heavily invested.”
Sparrow's teammate Jake Lever indicated on SEN on Tuesday that Sparrow had yet to make a decision about whether he will exercise his free agency rights.
Essendon and Port Adelaide are among the clubs to have interest in the midfielder as they prepare for the likely exits of star on-ballers Zach Merrett and Zak Butters respectively.
“If he does leave, I'd be shattered, but he's maximising his time in the game, and I could sleep well at night knowing we gave him an environment where he could play his best footy,” King added.
“In saying that, we'll fight tooth and nail to keep him. He's very important for us. He's the prototype of any midfielder a coach would want. An uncompromising, unconditional two-way runner and now you're seeing him play on instinct and show the footy world what he can do with ball in hand so he's almost the complete player.”
Asked about Melbourne ending its partnership with Zurich, King said he “had no light to shed” on the decision.
Jack Viney, who has yet to feature in 2026 due to a range of injuries, appears to have taken a step forward and King is not ruling out a late-season return.
“(It's) a step forward and just see how he goes, get through today, tick it off and see how he recovers,” King said.
“He's had a couple of sessions, we've got to a point where he's recovered well so hopefully sometimes when you increase your body either shuts down or responds well.
“He's taken a couple of steps forward now so maybe he might have just broken through that barrier where he can string a couple of games together and go from there.
“I don't want to put any timeline on it because he could get through three quarters of the session today and pull up a bit lame. I don't think we're there; anything's a bonus for Jack. Just seeing him out there training is great.
“You never close the door on any player.”
Changkouth Jiath will return for Friday night's clash against Geelong provided he gets through training.
Daniel Turner will miss, with King putting Harrison Petty, Tom McDonald, Xavier Taylor, and Lukas Cooke on the map as potential replacements.
