25-year-old Eagle Harry Edwards faces the very real prospect of a career cut short after another head knock during his side's clash with the Melbourne Demons on Sunday.

It is the key defender's third concussion already this season, and given the time taken to recover from his second, very real conversations will no doubt be had about the prospect of calling time on the career of the 2018 Rookie Draft selection.

In a cruel twist, this latest concussion was the result of friendly fire, with teammate Elliot Yeo catching the brave defender high in his attempts to corral Demons ruckman Max Gawn.

"I'm really concerned for Harry. It's really sad and unfortunate that he wasn't able to play for use today, but it's bigger than that for Harry right now. He's in great spirits, for what it's work, he is walking around, and he was at halftime, so he's in a good spot, but he did fail his SCAT test so, (we) understand what that means, and he'll have another stint on the sidelines now, and our team will just ensure that we look after Harry first and foremost," Eagles coach Andrew McQualter said.

McQualter was also accepting of the potential intervention of the AFL's concussion panel to determine Edwards' future.

Edwards has managed just the 56 games since his 2020 debut, but was viewed as a long-term replacement for the likes of the medically retired Jeremy McGovern and departed Tom Barrass.

Whether he will take up that mantle remains to be seen, with the club sure to take a cautious approach to the health of the Swan Districts product.

Edwards sat on the sidelines for a month after suffering a concussion in the Eagles' Round 2 victory over North Melbourne. That came after a pre-season concussion incurred against Port Adelaide, which was unfortunately also the result of friendly fire.
