Hawthorn legend Don Scott has not ruled out challenging Jeff Kennett for the Hawthorn presidency after the Hawks president said the club was "open" to relocating to Tasmania.
Scott was a focal figure in the Hawks' resistance to merge with Melbourne 25 years ago and would once again take a stand if they contemplate a move to the Apple Isle.
โItโd have to be set up right. Itโd have to be set up very differently. Iโm a very polarising figure,โ Scott told Daniel Cherny from The Age when asked if he would challenge Kennett for the presidency.
The former premiership captain said Kennett's choice of words around relocating to Tasmania was an "insult" to the Hawthorn board and members and believes there are better-qualified people to run the club.
โHawthorn is a Melbourne team, and thatโs what itโs all based on. We donโt live in the past but members were vocal once before. Thereโs a lot more members there now. The reaction would be very loud if they were going to do something like that,โ Scott told The Age.
โThere are people out there who are capable and better qualified than him to lead the club.โ
The Hawks have been trying to negotiate a new deal with the Tasmanian Government to play home games in Launceston, but the Government has refused to agree on a deal until the AFL provides a timeline on the establishment of a standalone Tasmanian team.
