Hawthorn has officially locked away shutdown defender James Sicily, agreeing to terms on a five-year contract to make him a 'Hawk for life'.

The 27-year-old, who is averaging an equal career-best 23.3 disposals per game in 2022, was set to be an in-demand commodity at the conclusion of this season, with his restricted free-agent status sure to tempt clubs into making an offer.

However, now tied to the Hawks until age 32, the Western Jets product is slated to be a one-club player.

Hawthorn recruiting manager Mark McKenzie was overjoyed at the news of Sicily's re-signing and praised the defender's development as a player and person.

"We couldn't be happier to make James a Hawk for life with this contract extension," McKenzie said.

"This deal demonstrates James' strong commitment to the club, as he continues to develop his leadership capabilities.

"After starting his career up forward, James has since become one of our most reliable defenders, with elite rebounding capacity.

"We hope Hawthorn members are excited as we are to keep James in the brown and gold for some time yet."

Sicily was chosen by Hawthorn with Pick 56 of the 2013 National Draft and has proved to be a diamond-in-the-rough selection.

Beginning his career as a forward, Sicily showed promise but was inconsistent. However, a move into defence would be invaluable to the trajectory of his career.

The intercept defender was also stand-in captain earlier this season, speaking volumes about the team player Sicily has become and suggesting that he may put his hand up for a permanent leadership role down the line.
