Resurgent Hawthorn star James Sicily is set to remain at Waverley Park for the foreseeable future, with the 27-year-old reportedly set to sign a new long-term deal at the Hawks.

The intercept defender has started 2022 in incredible fashion after coming back from a knee reconstruction that ruled him out for the second half of 2020 and all of 2021, already putting himself in the All-Australian discussion.

Sicily has played all six games for the Hawks this season, averaging 23 disposals, as well as raking in three intercept marks a game.

According to SEN's Sam Edmund, Sicily, who was set to become a free agent at season's end, had become a player of interest for Collingwood, with many clubs in the market for A-grade intercept defenders.

The Hawks have mutually agreed with veteran forward Jack Gunston to park contract talks for the 30-year-old until midway through the season.

Like Sicily, Gunston has found good form early in 2022 after being hit with injury in the past few seasons, however, Sam Mitchell's side will play it safe when it comes to offering the veteran a new deal.

Tipped to be a bottom side in 2022, the Hawks have started the season in surprisingly good fashion, entering Round 7 with a 3-3 record and currently sitting in ninth on the ladder.
