Essendon CEO Xavier Campbell has quietly signed a contract extension with the club, tying him to the Bombers until at least the end of 2024, despite growing calls from fans for an overhaul at the floundering club.
Per reports from 7NEWS, Campbell, who has been CEO at the club since 2014, was due to have his contract expire at the end of the year but has received backing from the Essendon board.
With Essendon struggling on-field so far in 2022, falling to a 2-7 win-loss tally to flounder at 16th on the ladder, the decision was met with criticism on social media from some Bombers fans.
With Xavier Campbell's contract extension, it is clear to me that the Essendon Football Club is damaged beyond repair. It is sad to see the football club I loved so much as a young boy fall so hard and so far. I am an eternal optimist, but even I can't see a way out of this.

Xavier Campbell contract extended for 2 years
Apparently done in last fortnight
I think that tells me all I need to know about this board and what it holds important
Even considering extending contracts in the last fortnight that don’t expire until years end is negligent https://t.co/YVOQsSG6rz— Silver Top Hurley (@SilverTopHurls) May 17, 2022
The Bombers face Richmond on Saturday night in the annual Dreamtime fixture, hoping to make amends for their lacklustre performance against Sydney in Round 9 which drew criticism from fans and the media as the Swans cruised to a 58-point win.
Essendon's month ahead doesn't get any easier, facing Port Adelaide, Carlton and St Kilda in a bid to get their season back on track.
