Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has pitched his Super Bowl inspired idea to redevelop the MCG after attending Monday's Super Bowl in Miami.

Speaking on Triple M's The Hot Breakfast on Tuesday, McGuire suggested connecting the concourse area of the MCG directly with Richmond Station, eliminating the need to close the traffic hot spot of Punt Road, Brunton Avenue and Swan St/Olympic Boulevard.

โ€œI was at Hard Rock, which used to be Joe Robbie Stadium, but what I liked about it is something that should be put on the table for the MCG," McGuire said.

"At some stage in the next few years the Southern Stand will be rebuilt, we need to do it properly and that is connect Richmond Station and have a concourse so at no stage do we ever put foot on Punt Road or Brunton Avenue ever again. Even from the Holden Center, Swan Street, Olympic Boulevard, the tennis centre, making that whole area magnificent.โ€

He also proposed putting an unsealed retractable roof, much like at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium, so the MCG could be used for events all year round, protecting fans from the harsh Melbourne elements.

โ€œLet's leave the MCG the way it is at the moment, just so you can picture what Iโ€™m talking about. And they have put above and around it this roof, so you still have the stands the way they are, itโ€™s above with air coming through so itโ€™s not sealed like Marvel Stadium.

โ€œIf you had within the next 10 years an MCG with a roof on it but also a roof over the concourse area on the outside of the MCG, so you never get wet or get your head burnt off in the middle of summer.

"You could have concerts there any time of the year, you could have your football, your cricket, you could have everything and you never have to worry about the elements again in Melbourne. But, at the same time not have it so homogenized that you feel like you are at just another indoor stadium.โ€

McGuire also stated how this redevelopment will continue to uphold Melbourne's place as a premier sporting and events city.

โ€œImagine getting off at Richmond Station, not having to go up and down escalators or anything. Walk straight across and have all your entry levels on level two of what the MCG is now rather than down on the ground.

"The concourse and underneath all that you can activate all that area, you never have a road shut and youโ€™re able to get everything done beautifully.

"If we had two stadiums like MCG and Marvel, we had a roof ready to be closed if need be, it would have us set as the best-facilitated stadium centre in the worldโ€.

  1. How about the other lesson from the Superbowl. Play it in different stadiums in different cities each year.
