Damian Barrett believes Stephen Coniglio will take over as captain of the Giants in 2020.

The star midfielder knocked back massive offers from Carlton and Hawthorn after he elected to re-sign with GWS on a seven-year deal on the eve of the 2019 finals series.

But Barrett suggested that Coniglio could be given the reigns going into 2020.

“I think it will be next year. Callan Ward and Phil Davis have been co-captains since their inception,” he told AFL Trade Radio.

“It wasn’t part of the negotiations around Coniglio staying, but it was an unspoken aspect of the staying and I reckon it’ll come in as soon as 2020.”

Matthew Lloyd is a big fan of Coniglio as a leader, saying he thinks it would be a good move for the Giants.

“I know Stephen pretty well through the Academy coaching I got to do about five or six years ago,” he said.

“He’s as influential as person I’ve seen in a team environment. It’s a matter of when, not if he’ll be captain of the GWS Giants, whether it’s next year of the year after.

“I think it would be good for Ward to just focus on his rehab and not worry about being captain.”
