AFL commentary legend Dennis Cometti has called for the league not to award a premiership or Brownlow Medal in the 2020 season.
The competition is currently shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with plans to restart on June 11 in what many believe will be a compromised season.
No crowds, fewer matches and shortened quarters are just some of the changes that have already been made to the campaign.
Speaking on Perth's Mix 94.5ย radio, Cometti believes the season has lost all prestige, and as such, major awards should not be given out.
โI can understand all thatโs going on here, but I donโt think there should be a premiership or a Brownlow Medal,โ he toldย Mix 94.5ย radio in Perth.
โI just feel strongly about that because this is a standalone world event, this isnโt over.
โSo playing says more about Australiaโs spirit than it does a cup or a medal. I think they should just drop the idea of it being a competition because it is so lop-sided, so strange and who knows what theyโre doing in two weeks time.
โI donโt think you can have a real serious competition based on what is pretty flimsy ground.
โExhibition games would sort of be the way I would describe them.
โThe best players are playing, but at the same time, these players are going to be finding these surrounds and everything theyโre doing out of character so itโs going to be a tough time for them.
โEveryone thinks of them of being an elite group because of what theyโve done so far and that is break what most people are doing, so I donโt think theyโd be much on the football ball, if you like, they wouldnโt be thinking about football and I donโt think theyโd be approaching it the same way.
โAs a football man I just think this would be a very awkward situation to be in, particularly if youโre playing golf with someone youโre playing against next weekend.โ
