Western Bulldogs VFL coach Stewart Edge has decided to step away from his coaching role after leading Footscray to a premiership in 2025, with Alex Johnson stepping into the top role.
Edge has been with the Bulldogs since joining in 2014, where he has spent the next 11 years in various coaching roles across AFL and VFL teams.
He was first a member of the coaching panel that helped secure the Bulldogs' 2014 and 2016 VFL premierships. He then took over the role as head coach of the VFL side in 2021.
"To be here for three VFL premierships and of course, the 2016 AFL premiership is something I will always value," Edge said in a club statement.
Edge has received the VFL coach of the year award twice, first being crowned in 2021 and then being awarded in 2025.
Bulldogs general manager of coaching and performance Matt Egan praised Edge for his contributions.

"It's such a special way to finish for Edgey, winning a premiership with an amazing bunch of players." Egan said in a club statement.
"We're so thankful to him for his contribution to the club and wish him the best moving forward."
Johnson will take the reins of the VFL program, while Anthony Barry will move into AFL development after seven seasons with the VFL, and former forward Mitch Hannan will step into a role focused on player welfare support.
“With Edgey's decision, it has opened the door to upskill our people and for AJ and Anthony these present great opportunities for their growth,” Egan added.
“As VFL coach, Alex will run his own program, build a team around him and take on more responsibility recruiting players, coaches and staff.

“Anthony's strengths lie in being a great connector of people, having spent a large period of time honing his craft in the VFL program.
“He played in the 2016 VFL Premiership and will be a great addition in our development space.”
