A 54-year-old man has been left with serious injuries after an alleged assault during Monday's ANZAC Day game at the MCG.

The alleged attack took place in the last quarter of the match, at an event in the Olympic Room attended by dignitaries including Richard Goyder and chief executive Gillon McLachlan.

Speaking to 9News Melbourne, the victim says he was punched around 15 times before heading to a hospital where he spent the night.

"(They) just left hooked me right to the side of my face... that spun me around, instantaneously I lost vision," the Kensington man said.

"I went to put my hand on my eye just to you know, sort of hold it, thinking 'what's going on?'. And before I even got a chance, a hail of strikes to the front and back of my head repeatedly.

"I was only able to get my eye open for the first time this morning."

Victoria Police confirmed the man was taken to hospital in the aftermath of the event, but the exact circumstances around the assault are unknown and are being investigated. It's alleged the victim was attacked after he criticised two young people for smoking.

"Melbourne crime investigation Unit detectives are investigating following an assault at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Anzac Day,” a police spokesperson said in a report by The Age.

"Investigators have been told a man was assaulted in a toilet cubicle inside the stadium around 5.30pm.

"The exact circumstances surrounding the assault are unknown and the investigation is ongoing.”

Anyone at the venue who may have witnessed the event, or with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers (1800 333 000).
