Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon says the AFL should move the Brownlow Medal presentation to the Monday before the finals bye.

Lyon argued on SEN this morning that the night and its winner suffers from occurring on Grand Final week and being overrun by the hype of the game.

"Of course they should’ve had the Brownlow last Monday. The Monday (bye week) Brownlow is a no brainer for mine," he said.

"An absolute no brainer in my mind.

"The reason it’s not is because they think it’s such an integral part of the Grand Final week and the build-up."

SEN co-host, former Essendon champion Tim Watson agreed with Lyon, saying it could make the bye week more special.

"This is my idea, we have the Brownlow last Monday night. So there’s something massive that happens in that week," Watson said.

"There’s clean air around it, the bloke that wins can actually celebrate, whether he’s playing or not and he becomes the focus for a whole week.

"The winner gets lost in the Grand Final week."
