Richmond put up an impressive fight to an in-form Carlton brigade on Saturday night, falling just short but losing no admirers.

One Tiger leading the way was Jack Ross whose fight and spirit saw him concussed in the second quarter of the match after he produced a brutal tackle on Blues defender Lachie Cowan.

The tackle came at an important time for Richmond, as its opponents were starting to take control of the contest.

Speaking after the game, Tigers coach Adem Yze was full of praise for Ross and his team first approach.

"It was such a courageous thing for him to do," Yze said.

"It was pure leadership. I spoke to him about it after the game and he obviously can't remember a lot about it, but he just needed to make a statement for our team. We needed something and it happened right in front of the bench, the pressure started to accumulate.

"Obviously, the technique he has put his head in the wrong spot unfortunately, but that's what great Richmond men do and he is one of them. He is a leader for a reason. He is looking okay, he is walking around and talking so he will go through the protocol.

"We are going to miss him because he is a heart and soul player you really want out there and he deserves to finish off the season really strongly."

It's Ross' second concussion for the season and his second within a month. He will miss at least next weekend's clash with Melbourne at the MCG.

The Tigers got the jump on the Blues in the first quarter leading the contest 33-15 at quarter time. The two clubs then got embroiled in a good old fashioned melee after the siren, with Yze impressed with his players' willingness to fight for the crest.

"We have got some cheeky young lads out there, so they were probably starting it," he laughed.

"But that's all part of it.

"That's part of putting the jumper on. We expect them to play a certain way and we expect them to fly the flag and stick up for each other.

"We need to play with that spirit."
