In a letter to members in the aftermath of the Crows' bitter semi-final loss at Brisbane's hand, Adelaide CEO Tim Silvers has confirmed that Matthew Nicks will remain in the club's head coaching chair for 2027.
Nicks found himself again in the headlines, as rumours circulated in recent weeks that a loss to the Western Bulldogs in the elimination final would have drawn curtains on his tenure.
The Crows survived that game, but were summarily embarrassed by the Lions a week later, but Silvers leapt to Nicks' defence regardless.
“There has been considerable commentary and speculation about our senior coach's future in recent times but our position has not changed,” Silvers said.
“We believe in Matthew Nicks, we trust the program he leads, and we remain aligned on our vision for the future. He will be our senior coach in 2027.
“Since taking over the men's program at the beginning of a significant and ambitious rebuild, Nicksy has built a strong and positive culture, overseen the development and progression of young talent, and created an environment in which our people are connected, driven and committed to improving.
“There were more highs than lows but when a season ends earlier than we want, there will naturally be disappointment, questions and strong opinions. Club leaders will now take the necessary time to thoroughly review the season. We will be honest in assessing where we improved, where we fell short and what is required to bridge the gap between being a finals team and a genuine premiership contender.”
The endorsement comes after Nicks stood firm in his assertion he was the right man for the job, after the Brisbane loss.
Speaking in the post-game press conference, Nicks delivered a short and sharp response when questioned about if he would ask for reassurance from the club on his coaching position.
"No," Nicks said.
When asked again on if he was certain of his coaching future Nicks expanded further.
"There's no guarantees in footy, but I'm confident of where we are at and the conversations that are on-going with the leaders of our football club and my colleagues," he said.
"We have great forward momentum as a football club. We are building something quite special. We are not there yet and we know we still have a fair way to go but there is no doubt we are heading in the right direction and we have the right people around the club.
"I'm blessed to be a part of that and I will just keep working."
