A throwback to each club's 90's era

As the AFL and Fox Footy launch their 'Retro Round' this weekend, the Zero Hanger team have rewound the clock to see how each club performed throughout the decade, and a look at the kits that each club wore during the 90's. Adelaide Winning percentage: 46.97% The Crows came into the league in 1991 with the highlights of their decade coming in 1997 and 1998 when they won back-to-back premierships. [caption id="attachment_87894" align="alignnone" width="559"] Source: Footyjumpers.com[/caption] The Crows' 1999 away jumper was a great mix of the traditional red, blue and yellow stripes with the Crow placed in the middle, making it a memorable jumper. The club's original home kit worn during the 1997 Grand Final was a classic kit that everyone remembers and is similar to the jersey that the present day Crows wear. Brisbane Bears Winning percentage: 31.82% The Brisbane Bears came into the league in 1987 and existed until they merged with Fitzroy in 1996 to become the Brisbane Lions. One of the worst teams in the league throughout the early 90's, but made the preliminary final in 1996, their last game as a club before merging. The 1994 Brisbane Bears home kit is a classic one that the Bears wore for the majority of their existence and is a nice clean jumper. [caption id="attachment_87895" align="alignnone" width="579"] Source: Footyjumpers.com[/caption] The original 1987 jumper was an interesting one that almost clashed with the Hawks jumper as they shared the same colours. Brisbane Lions Winning percentage: 46.97% The Lions were formed in 1997 with the merging of the Brisbane Bears and Fitzroy. Managed to make a preliminary final in 1999 in their third year which is an impressive feat for the newly established side. The 1999 home jumper is the classic jumper that everyone remembers with the Lions from their existence to the present day. Carlton Winning percentage: 57.73% Carlton enjoyed a strong decade on the field, winning the 1995 premiership and making grand finals in 1993 and 1999. [caption id="attachment_87897" align="alignnone" width="558"] Source: Footyjumpers.com[/caption] Carlton's promotional jumper of the new light blue M&M chocolate in round 3, 1997 was a memorable jumper but a laughable one at best. Collingwood Winning percentage: 47.73% The Magpies supporters would've gone through a rollercoaster of emotions during the 90's as Collingwood won the 1990 premiership, but gradually declined throughout the decade to finish wooden spooners in 1999. [caption id="attachment_87898" align="alignnone" width="576"] Source: Footyjumpers.com[/caption] The 1996 pre-season jumper that the Magpies wore is a pretty chaotic jumper with stripes of varying sizes and lengths and jagged edges, which makes for an eventful jumper with a bit too much happening on it, resembling a barcode in the end. Essendon Winning percentage: 60.45% Essendon's 90's campaign was highlighted by the 1993 'Baby Bombers' winning the premiership and being one of the best sides in 1999 without winning it. Also made the 1990 Grand Final before losing to Collingwood. The classic red sash is iconic and has been a staple on the Essendon jumper throughout its history, and is donned here by Matthew Lloyd in 1999. Fitzroy Winning percentage: 24.68% Fitzroy had a disastrous end to their existence, not making the finals at all in the 90's highlighted by a one-win season in 1996 where they were merged with the Brisbane Bears into the Brisbane Lions. Although they were poor on-field, their jumper was iconic and full of rich history dating back to 1897. Their 1996 jumper may have been the freshest and most vibrant version of the Fitzroy jumper. Footscray/Western Bulldogs Winning percentage: 55% Footscray were competitive in the 90's, highlighted by a preliminary final appearance in 1992 and a finals appearance in 1994, before they turned into the Western Bulldogs in 1996. The Bulldogs were instantly great in 1997 narrowly missing the Grand Final to Adelaide, and suffered the same fortune in 1998. The classic Footscray jumper worn here by Doug Hawkins in 1994 was the main jumper design since its creation in 1925, and the current day Bulldogs still wear a similar strip to this. Fremantle Winning percentage: 33.64% Fremantle came into the league in 1995 and never really became a strong force in the late 90's, missing the finals each year from 1995 to 1999 which is understandable for a new club in the league. The classic Freo anchor jersey in 1999 is definitely their best jumper since their creation and they will wear it this weekend with the current day Freo crop. Geelong Winning percentage: 58.18% The Cats were very good in the 90's but couldn't win a premiership to capitalise on their strong seasons. Made the Grand Finals in 1992, 1994 and 1995 but didn't win any. Had a memorable team with the likes of Gary Ablett Snr., Billy Brownless and Garry Hocking. The classic blue and white hoops define Geelong and this jumper is the classic one that they wore, especially in the 90's. [caption id="attachment_87903" align="alignnone" width="564"] Source: Footyjumpers.com[/caption] The Cats away jumper in 1999 was a classic alternative that still featured the blue and white stripes with the Geelong logo in the middle. Definitely a memorable jersey. Hawthorn Winning percentage: 51.82% The Hawks were a force in the early 90's winning the 1991 premiership which capped off a dynasty that had lasted throughout the 80's. Consistently in the finals until dropping off in the late 90's. [caption id="attachment_87904" align="alignnone" width="548"] Source: Footyjumpers.com[/caption] The diamond jumper that the Hawks wore in the 1995 pre-season is infamous for being one of the worst jumpers created in the league's history. A very bad design and mix of colours which makes for a terrible jumper. Melbourne Winning percentage: 49.55% The Demons were a very inconsistent outfit during the 90's, with top four finishes in 1990 and 1998, but a wooden spoon finish in 1997. The red and blue design worn in the 90's had been around since the 1930's and is a classic design that is instilled in Demons history. North Melbourne Winning percentage: 55% North Melbourne's 90's campaign was highlighted by premierships in 1996 and 1999. A very strong team with the likes of Wayne Carey, Anthony Stephens, Glenn Archer and Corey McKernan just to name a few. The classic blue and white stripes are the staple of the Kangaroos uniform, and were worn in both premierships in 1996 and 1999. [caption id="attachment_87906" align="alignnone" width="558"] Source: Footyjumpers.com[/caption] The away jerseys worn in 1998 and 1999 were a nice alternative to the blue and white stripes. Although the stripes still feature, it's the Kangaroo that makes this jumper a memorable one. Port Adelaide Winning percentage: 46.97% Port Adelaide did not have much of a history in the 90's as they were formed in 1997. They were competitive straight from the get go, narrowly missing out on finals in 97 and 98, before sneaking into the finals in 99. The original Port jersey with the lightning bolts coming down the jersey remains the best Port jersey to date. Richmond Winning percentage: 41.82% The Tigers were pretty poor for majority of the 90's, making the finals only once where they made the preliminary final in 1995. The yellow sash has been a Tigers trademark since the first World War and continues to be so. A simple but iconic jersey that is still worn to this day. [caption id="attachment_87907" align="alignnone" width="558"] Source: Footyjumpers.com[/caption] The Tigers' 1998 pre-season jumper is an interesting one that is sure to divide opinions on if it was a good jumper or not. St. Kilda Winning percentage: 50% The Saints' 90's campaign was highlighted by a grand final appearance in 1997 but apart from that, they were pretty disappointing. 1991 they came in fourth and 1992 they won a final. The Saints 1999 home jumper was a popular one after being used in the pre-season. Their away jumper of the red, white and black stripes has now become the main home jumper. Sydney Winning percentage: 36.82% Sydney had a somewhat tumultuous 90's campaign as they were very poor in the first half of the 90's, and the only real highlight of the 90's was making the 1996 Grand Final. The Swans jumper in the 90's was a good one with the outline of the Sydney Opera House combined in the classic red and white South Melbourne culture makes for their best jumper to date. West Coast Winning percentage: 65.45% The Eagles were the most successful and consistent team in the 90's, making the finals every season in the 90's highlighted by premierships in 1992 and 1994. The jumper that the Eagles wore in their premierships is a classic one, with the picture of an Eagle surrounded by the blue and yellow which makes for a vintage jumper.
