North Melbourne coach Brad Scott has said the club will explore options of adding to its midfield depth in the trade period and through free agency.

Speaking on SEN, the coach suggested he would want to add some experience to a young midfield.

"We’d love to bring in another midfielder in or two," Scott said.

"But we didn’t last year and what happened is Trent Dumont came forward, Jy Simpkin came forward, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Paul Ahern and Jed Anderson.

"Every time you don’t get a player people think it’s a disaster, whereas it gives you an opportunity to grow other players.

"We’re still in a good position with the young players we’ve got coming through, but we’d certainly like to add a few."

North Melbourne have been heavily linked to both Andrew Gaff and Jared Polec, having reportedly plenty of cap space to spend on the two midfielders.

Scott said he was unaware of either player's intentions this off-season.

"I don’t think players want to make a decision on those things with any finality until something can be done about it," he added.

"It’s a really tough one for clubs because we’re in the dark; we don’t know exactly what’s going on.

"When the trade period opens up in October is when you find out and we’ve been in that position plenty of times before.

"Some have gone our way and some haven’t, so we’re still none the wiser."
