Whether it is through player improvement or through coaching methods, every action has an equal and opposite reaction to what fans have come to expect from the years prior, with a player's form or a lapse in coaching sometimes either making or breaking a season.
Accounting for this, I took a look at each team's surprise player or coach and each team's shocking disappointment.
Geelong Cats
Surprise: Oisin Mullin
There are far fewer players who are better throughout the competition than Mullin when it comes to playing the role of tagger for his club. Slowing down marquee players like Finn Callaghan, Marcus Bontempelli and Nick Daicos, the Irishman has made a name for himself as one to be feared on the field by the best.
Shock: Jeremy Cameron
It's more of a shock to his consistency rather than the player himself, but Cameron has had a season to forget, injury and form-wise. At times, the premiership player has disappeared in multiple games, failing to kick a goal in losses to the Crows, Lions and Giants.
