Essendon's list and professionalism are key factors behind why recruit Brayden Fiorini chose to leave the Gold Coast Suns, who was traded to the Bombers for a 2026 third-round selection on Tuesday.

The wingman featured in 18 matches for the Suns, including two finals, after starting the season in the VFL and working his way back into the AFL side.

Fiorini highlighted that the trade call was a difficult one but was looking forward to potentially playing alongside captain Zach Merrett in 2026.

"Through the process, I asked a lot of questions [regarding their list] and was really impressed; they were very professional," Fiorini said on AFL Trade Radio on Wednesday.

"My fingers are crossed that I can play alongside him [Zach Merrett] next year.

"I have loved my time this year, and the Suns are on the rise. It was a tough decision.

"I went through the pros and cons, but I am glad I made the decision and am super excited to get back to Melbourne."

Fiorini also provided an insight into what is role may look like next year following an up-and-down year at Gold Coast, which included a month-long stint in the reserves.

"I'll be predominantly on the wing and to help the insiders with my footy IQ and voice," Fiorini said.

"The clear vision and path they have moving forward as a club and for me as a player really resonated with me. From the get-go, they made me feel really valued."

Fiorini is so far the only recruit for the Bombers this trade period, with ruckman Sam Draper traded to the Lions and captain Zach Merrett potentially on the way out as well.

Fiorini recorded 25 or more disposals on four occasions in 2025, three of those coming against top four sides, highlighting the layer of class he can add to the Bombers midfield depth, which was whittled down due to the club's injury crisis this year.
