Sydney midfielder James Rowbottom has reportedly spoken with Collingwood coach Craig McRae as the Magpies look to bolster their engine room.

Rowbottom has emerged as a late trade chance for the Swans as they look to satisfy Carlton in negotiations for Charlie Curnow, with the New South Wales club potentially parting with players to build their hand of assets.

Forward Will Hayward and defender Ollie Florent have also been looped into trade speculation, whether they be moved to the Blues or elsewhere.

For Rowbottom, the Victorian is keen to remain in Sydney but has gained external interest, with his management confirming clubs have been in contact.

“It's that time of year, clubs have asked the question and no doubt been ringing Sydney about him. He loves the club and the players, I can't see it happening,” agent Matt Bain told afl.com.au.

According to 7 News reporter Mitch Cleary, Rowbottom has held talks with Collingwood, who are keen to bolster their engine room.

Rowbottom, who is contracted until the end of 2029, would be a starting midfield option in the black and white, as opposed to being in a long line of ball winners in Sydney, who have Chad Warner, Errol Gulden and Isaac Heeney at their disposal.

Collingwood have shown a want for experienced midfield talent to support Nick Daicos, having chased Clayton Oliver and Jy Simpkin this off-season.

Oliver is headed for GWS before Wednesday's trade deadline, while Simpkin looks most likely to remain at North Melbourne given the Roos' high price for their captain and his lucrative contract.

Collingwood currently hold Picks 39, 59, 61 and 77 for next month's draft, as well as their future selections for the 2026 and 2027 drafts.
