Carlton has confirmed key forward Joel Amartey intends to join the club as an unrestricted free agent.

The club confirmed the news in a three-line statement on Wednesday, with Sydney also releasing a statement thanking him for his service.

A 10-week Achilles injury sidelined Amartey mid-year but since Coleman Medalist Charlie Curnow's arrival this year, there has been a squeeze on for key forward spots, and Logan McDonald's emergence has also hurt him.

He was available but was overlooked for the Swans' preliminary final loss to Fremantle.

Despite their barnstorming run in the second half of the season where Brodie Kemp and Mitch McGovern played important roles, the Blues have lacked a long-term key forward to accompany Harry McKay since Curnow's departure.

He kicked 28 goals in 15 games this year and has 114 goals from 76 career games.

At 27, the 195cm goal-kicker is in his prime but due to injuries has never been able to put a consistent block of form together.

His touted contract has been reported at about $800,000 a season
