Sydney coach Dean Cox says dropped midfielder Oliver Florent remains firmly in the club's "long-term plans" despite currently featuring in the VFL.

Cox's first 14 games in charge haven't gone to plan after taking over from John Longmire, and his inconsistent start has forced multiple changes to the senior side, including Florent.

The 26-year-old was demoted following the Round 11 loss to Melbourne, spending the last three weeks in the reserves.

It is understood that the Victorian is reportedly in the sights of rival clubs, despite being contracted until the end of 2029.

"We wouldn't have signed Ollie on his contract last year if he wasn't part of our long-term plans," Cox said.

"Players go through periods when they're in and out of form. To Ollie's credit, he's gone back there with an amazing attitude and played the way we want him to play.

"When an opportunity presents, he'll be ready."

Florent has played a class above in the VFL during his rare time in the state league, averaging 25.3 disposals, 5.7 tackles and 4.3 marks.

He was recently joined by two-time Bob Skilton medallist Jake Lloyd, who was dropped for the first time in over 10 years.

The pair will come into selection consideration for the club's crucial Friday night clash against the Western Bulldogs.

A major contributor to the Bulldogs outfit is unicorn Sam Darcy, who has been unstoppable in 2025 despite a serious knee injury earlier in the year.

Standing at 208cm, boasting an incredible level of athleticism, the task of curbing Darcy's influence appears impossible, with Cox providing a quip that, in reality, would have a way of stopping the father-son gun.

"Get a step ladder," Cox said.

"Whether it's highest point (marking), whether it's contested, he gets them on the lead, can do multiple things around the ground as well, that's what makes him such a phenomenal talent.

"That's what makes this game as great as it is. All different shapes and sizes can play it, and Sam's been unbelievable for the Bulldogs.

"We need to make sure that we've got matchups that are capable and can restrict him as much as possible, but also have a team focus. We'll spend a fair bit of time (on planning for him)."

The Swans are losing weeks to make a genuine attempt at a surprise finals run, currently sitting in 11th position with six wins.
