The AFL is expected to investigate an incident from Friday's match between Richmond and the Western Bulldogs, where a fan reached over the fence to touch Tigers player Marlion Pickett.

During the third term of the game at Marvel Stadium, a fan can be seen putting their hand on Pickett after the Richmond premiership player stood near the ground's barrier, with Pickett retaliating by turning around and knocking the supporter's drink from their hands.

Security was in close vicinity of the incident and was able to step in, while Pickett was quick to return to play. At the three-quarter time break, Pickett spoke with security and Richmond football boss Tim Livingstone, who relayed the player's concerns to the AFL.

Richmond caretaker coach Andrew McQualter said while he wasn't fully aware of the incident, the actions involved from the fan were alarming.

"I don't know the full details, but it shouldn't happen," McQualter said.

"We love fans in our game, and they're so critical to our game, but our players should never, ever be touched when they're on the football field.

"I think all Marlion was doing was alerting Tim to the fact that something happened, and just getting security to deal with it and the AFL will deal with it now."

Richmond's Tom Lynch was involved in a post-game incident with a Port Adelaide fan in the 2020 finals series at Adelaide Oval when a fan threw a drink at the Tigers forward during a post-game interview.

The fan had their Port Adelaide membership revoked for two years while further sanctions were handed down from the AFL and Adelaide Oval.

At the same venue in May 2018, an Adelaide fan was banned from attending Adelaide Oval matches for the remainder of the season after inappropriately touching Western Bulldogs captain Easton Wood over the fence.

The AFL are yet to comment on the incident involving Pickett from Friday's match.
