South Australian born Sam Mayes has signed with North Adelaide after his departure from Port Adelaide in the AFL.

Mayes was delisted following the 2022 season after 17 games with the Power, previously playing 101 for the Lions before leaving the club in 2018.

The 28-year-old featured heavily at VFL level in 2022, managing just three senior games with Port, averaging 28.5 disposals, 7 clearances and 7 tackles for the Port Adelaide Magpies.

Born in Port Pirie, Mayes said he was grateful for the opportunity to represent a South Australian club.

“After being drafted from North Adelaide in 2012, I am grateful for the opportunity to head back to the club that has given me so much," Mayes said.

Senior coach Jacob Surjan released a statement through the club welcoming Mayes.

“One thing we pride ourselves on is bringing North Adelaide people home and we are thrilled to have Sam back at our club," Surjan said.

"An outstanding person with high integrity and character, he will bring another element of skilfulness & toughness to our midfield group.

"A leader on and off the field, Sam comes back to North Adelaide with a hunger and mindset to improve himself, the playing group and football club. We are all looking forward to seeing what Sam contributes next season.

"Please welcome Sam, partner Cassie and son Cooper back into the North Adelaide family."
