GWS Giants piled on a record-breaking third quarter at Engie Stadium on Sunday, kicking 14.2 against reigning premier Brisbane.

It is the highest scoring third quarter in VFL/AFL history, with seven goals inside the first seven minutes setting the tone.

The Lions managed just three behinds.

The Giants continued to blow Brisbane out of the park, swelling a six-point half-time lead to a mammoth 89-point three-quarter time margin.

Toby Greene kicked four of the goals, while Aaron Cadman was also electric with his marking and pressure.

The result was made all the more stunning by the fact GWS was missing nine first choice players, including late out Jack Buckley.

It's a significant win for the Giants, whose season was floundering at 4-6 before the match which has seemingly clicked them into gear.

Meanwhile, the loss sinks the Lions to 6-5 and while there is widespread belief across the competition that they will be thereabouts again in September, matches against Fremantle and Gold Coast in the next fortnight suddenly have a lot writing on them.
