West Coast recruit Matt Flynn will be sidelined for up to three months after requiring surgery on a detached tendon between his hamstring and knee.

The Eagles ruckman sustained the setback during the Eagles' captain's run last week ahead of their maiden pre-season game, with Flynn reporting pain around his knee/shin after jumping into a ruck bag during a drill.

Scans have since shown significant damage to Flynn's leg, with the former GWS big man going under the knife to treat the ailment.

The Eagles confirmed on Monday evening that Flynn sustained the 'rare' injury and will miss 10-12 weeks of action post-operation.

"This is a really unique injury that experienced medical staff have rarely seen. There have only been a couple of other cases similar to Matt's injury in recent AFL history," West Coast football boss Gavin Bell said in a club update.

"Post surgery he will be on crutches for a short while before starting his recovery. The expected time before his return to play is between 10 and 12 weeks.

"Because of the unusual nature of the injury, unfortunately, we cannot be any more specific but look forward to a fit and healthy Matt returning to the field."

Flynn joined the Eagles over the recent off-season from the Giants as a free agent, linking up with the Western Australian club to become their No.1 ruck option for 2024.

He played 33 games for GWS across eight seasons, all of which came in the past three years.
