The AFL has introduced many new rules over the past few years to help make the game faster and more entertaining for the fans.

While some changes have improved the game, others have made it confusing and matches at times, difficult to watch.

Last weekend, in Round 16, there were numerous instances of confusing free kicks given and it was overall a very bland round of footy.

Because of this, I have decided to list some of the AFL's rules, especially the ones brought in this year, and rank them in three categories: Red light  (needs to go!), green light (yes, can stay) and amber (caution/needs a tweak).

ARC

The ARC score review system needs to remain. It helps ensure the correct decision is made, even if it occasionally takes too long or goal umpires call for them numerous times a game.

Unless you are David Rodan and back yourself to make a decision, accuracy is the most important thing when deciding a goal or point as it could potentially change the game.

The ARC has been met with some criticism by the AFL world, however without it, wrong decisions will be made. The AFL did help themselves after they banned ARC intervention once play resumed following the debacle with Rowan Marshall against West Coast, but without it, incorrect decisions would become far more common.

Verdict: Green
