Essendon may welcome back crucial key forward Peter Wright for its all-important clash with struggling Carlton on Sunday at the MCG.

The 26-year-old deadeye has been battling a shoulder ailment but is almost fully recovered and ready to return to the field.

Essendon General Manager of Performance Daniel McPherson says the ex-Sun has put himself in a position to put his hand up for selection after recently rejoining main training at The Hangar.

"Pete joined in main training last week and will do so again this week ahead of a potential return against the Blues," McPherson said.

"Pete's the ultimate professional, and has worked incredibly hard over the last few months to get himself back to this point. We'll get through this week's main training session, and make the final decision after that."

Wright's potential return this week comes at a fortunate time for the Bombers, who have gathered considerable winning momentum over the course of the last month.

The Bombers will announce their squad for Sunday's contest on Thursday evening, with their final team to be released on Friday afternoon.
