Port Adelaide halfback Darcy Byrne-Jones has been handed a one-year contract extension, taking him through until the end of 2027.
The 30-year-old has been used as a small swingman in recent years. After earning an All-Australian jacket and best-and-fairest award in 2020, Byrne-Jones found himself shunted to attack, where he acted as a pressure forward for the next few seasons.
Under new coach Josh Carr, Byrne-Jones was swung back to defence in 2026 and has averaged 20 disposals a game.
Byrne-Jones said he has enjoyed the move back to his natural habitat this season.
“I love this club and I had no hesitation about signing on at Port Adelaide for another year,” Byrne-Jones said.
“I've enjoyed my move back into defence this season and feel like I can continue to play a role in this team in 2027.
“With so many young boys coming through the system now, I've enjoyed the chance to help lead the backline this year, particularly as we've implemented a new game plan.
“I'm already looking forward to next year and seeing how we can step up as a group.”
The Power has been on a contract offering and culling spree since their season ended. The club signed midfielder Ollie Wines to a one-year extension this week.
Utilities Lachie Jones and Ewan Mackinlay both received two-year deals, while Mitch Zadow and Balyn O'Brien both extended their contracts by one year.
Meanwhile, Jackson Mead, Will Lorenz, Mani Liddy, Xavier Walsh, Benny Barrett and Jacob Moss have been told their services are no longer needed.
The Power has a young playing list with club-tied draft talent expected to walk through the Alberton doors over the next two seasons.
Port Adelaide list manager Jason Cripps said it was crucial to keep experienced campaigners such as Byrne-Jones around to show the way forward for the next generation.
“Darcy has been a really important part of our team this season, and shows no signs of slowing down,” Cripps said.
“His AFL experience is invaluable to this young group, and his work-rate and versatility have enabled him to play whatever role is needed.
“We look forward to what he'll bring in 2027.”
