Believe it or not, Essendon vs Collingwood at the MCG isn't the only game ever played on Anzac Day. Footy on April 25 actually dates back to 1960, with a mix of memorable matchups, big crowds and a few quirky experiments along the way as the game found its place on one of the nation's most important days.

From double-headers and epic comebacks to games across the ditch and the odd freakish moment, I've gone digging through the archives to pull together a few of the best from over the years...

3R5 1992 – Essendon v Melbourne @ MCG

Bombers epic last quarter comeback.

On Anzac Day 1992, Essendon would pull off one of the great heists, coming from 47 points down early in the last quarter to stun Melbourne.

The Dees had controlled the game for three quarters, with Garry Lyon on top, but the Bombers flipped it. Paul Salmon exploded with four last-quarter goals (seven for the day), Peter Somerville gave them first use, and the midfield surged through Michael Long and Kieran Sporn.

A stroke of Kevin Sheedy genius/madness, swinging Derek Kickett behind the ball, helped spark the run as Essendon piled on eight unanswered goals. The defining moment came when a young Gavin Wanganeen won a holding-the-ball free and nailed the go-ahead goal from 50.

Essendon stormed home to win by a point, leaving Melbourne shell-shocked after coughing up a game they had in their keeping. The game was not televised at the time, but video has emerged on YouTube with the late, great EJ Whitten calling the game for K-Rock in commentary that is worth your time.
