Melbourne will still be looking at improving its forward line mix despite missing out on Hawthorn's Calsher Dear.
The Demons were heavily interested in Dear, tabling a four-year deal and sending Max Gawn as part of their pitch to lure him out of Dingley.
But the father-son Hawk signed a two-year extension to remain in the brown and gold, which is a blow to Melbourne.
"I think you can never have too much talent ahead of the ball," Melbourne list boss Tim Lamb said.
"Have a look at all the footy this year; scoring has increased, and even during the finals, there were some big scores on the park.
"That's an area we'll look to bring in. Obviously we're looking at certain types of players to fit in the way we play. Certain athletic profile. Certain skill level that complements what we've got, what we've brought in and play the way Steven wants the game to be played."

North Melbourne forward Zane Duursma requested a trade to the Demons last month, with a deal expected to go through during the next two weeks.
"Zane has requested a trade to us, which is exciting. Zane was an early draft pick. He's out of contract. We've had some preliminary conversations with North, but we're hopeful of bringing Zane in."
Lamb also responded to queries regarding the future of contracted premiership utility Trent Rivers, who has been linked with a move away from the club.
Rivers has ties in Western Australia as well as Brisbane, with the Lions and Eagles looming as potential destinations, if he were to rip up his 2027 contract.
"There has been some media stuff about Trent and a possible move," Lamb said.

"We haven't got anything official from his management around that. We'll deal with it if it comes up in the next couple of weeks."
Melbourne is also working through the likely departure of club great Jack Viney, who is tipped to join the Eagles.
Viney has interest from West Coast and Essendon, but spent the past few days in Western Australia touring the Eagles' facilities.
When doorstopped at the airport, the former Demons captain left by saying "a deal will get done".
Lamb provided more context around the conversations between Steven King and Viney during his exit meeting.
"We were really honest with Jack. Steven explained what our midfield would look like going forward and the opportunity we wanted to give some of our younger guys who are emerging and will take us forward," he explained.
"And that may result in limited opportunities for Jack in that role. Jack's a great of our club and deserves honesty and clarity, which is what we wanted to give him. That may result in Jack seeking opportunity elsewhere, which we are open to.
"That'll play out over the next couple of weeks. But if nothing happens, Jack is here, and that's awesome."
